Woodbridge Early Childhood Education Center has earned national recognition for its commitment to inclusion through Special Olympics Unified Sports. The school’s application to the Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools National Recognition Program has been approved by Special Olympics North America, recognizing WECEC’s efforts to create a school community where students of all abilities are included, connected, and celebrated.
The recognition reflects a program that has grown significantly since Kelly Cole and Tiffany Schutt began working with Special Olympics Unified Sports in 2022. What started with a small group has expanded to 45 students this school year, including both Unified athletes and partners.
Throughout the year, students participate in a variety of activities that provide opportunities to build friendships, develop confidence, and learn and compete together. In the fall, students participate in Bocce, while second-grade students take part in a soccer competition in the spring. Kindergarten and first-grade students also participate in the Sussex County Unified Expo. WECEC’s youngest Blue Raiders are part of the school’s commitment to inclusion as well. Each spring, all preschool classes participate in a Special Olympics Field Day, providing students with an opportunity to experience physical activity, teamwork, and the spirit of Special Olympics.
The commitment to inclusion extends beyond athletic events. Once a month, students gather for Breakfast Buddies, giving them an opportunity to connect, socialize, and develop meaningful relationships with one another.
While Cole and Schutt have helped coordinate and grow the program, its success is truly a schoolwide effort. WECEC administrators, teachers, specialists, and staff provide ongoing support that makes these experiences possible for students. From helping organize activities and preparing students to encouraging participation and creating an inclusive environment each day, the program reflects the collective commitment of the entire WECEC community.
Through Unified Sports, Breakfast Buddies, the Unified Expo, Special Olympics Field Day, and other inclusive experiences, WECEC continues to create opportunities for students to see one another as teammates, friends, and valued members of their school community.
Earning national recognition from the Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools program marks an exciting milestone for WECEC and celebrates the collaborative work taking place each day to ensure every student has opportunities to participate, connect, and belong.
