The Woodbridge Middle School library is getting a student-powered makeover as classes work together to “genrify” the collection, making it easier for readers to discover books they enjoy.

6th grade students have been busy learning about different types of genres in their research and taking it a step further for practical practice. Students are sorting books and placing colorful genre stickers on book spines to identify categories such as fantasy, historical fiction, sci-fi, graphic novels, and realistic fiction. The project is designed to help students quickly locate stories that match their interests while creating a more welcoming and accessible library environment.

Ms. Barbour’s goal is to streamline the process of finding materials and encourage students to read for pleasure more often. Instead of searching shelf by shelf, students can now identify genres at a glance, helping readers discover new books and authors more independently.

The project has also given students an opportunity to take ownership of their library space. Students working in the library have helped organize shelves, label materials, and discuss how librarydifferent genres appeal to different readers. Their efforts are helping create a system that is more student-friendly and easier to navigate.

As the genrefication project continues, WMS hopes the updated organization system will increase student engagement with books and inspire lifelong reading habits. The library plans to continue expanding labels and displays so students can continue exploring new genres and recommendations next school year.
