Woodbridge High School paid tribute to one of its most influential coaches on February 10, naming its basketball court in honor of longtime coach Len Chasanov. The special ceremony took place prior to the varsity basketball team’s matchup against Seaford, a fitting opponent, as Chasanov once coached there as well.
The evening brought together former players, fellow coaches, longtime friends, and members of the Chasanov family to celebrate a legacy that has shaped Woodbridge athletics for decades.
The program began with remarks from Dane Sears, WECEC Principal, who introduced Superintendent Kevin Long. Long spoke about Chasanov’s lasting contributions to the Woodbridge School District. Long highlighted Chasanov’s dedication not only to the basketball program but also to baseball, emphasizing the countless student-athletes he mentored and the culture of teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship he helped build.
“Coach Chasanov’s impact goes far beyond wins and losses,” Long noted, pointing to the generations of students who benefited from his leadership and guidance both on and off the court.
When Chasanov took the microphone, he was visibly moved by the honor. He thanked his family, fellow coaches, former players, and the many fans who supported Woodbridge athletics throughout his career. He spoke warmly about his love for the game and the joy he found in working with young athletes.
“I’ve always loved the game,” Chasanov shared, reflecting on the relationships and memories built over years on the sidelines. “But what meant the most was the opportunity to work with great kids and great people.”
One of the evening’s most memorable moments came with the unveiling of Chasanov’s signature on the court , a permanent tribute to his dedication and influence. As the covering was removed, the crowd applauded, marking the official naming of the court in his honor.
Among those in attendance were Chasanov’s children, including former Woodbridge Superintendent and 1987 graduate Heath Chasanov, as well as Heath’s sister, Alisa also a 1985 graduate. Their presence underscored the deep family ties to the district and the lasting bond between the Chasanov family and the Woodbridge community.
The ceremony served not only as a recognition of a distinguished coaching career, but also as a celebration of mentorship, leadership, and community pride. As the varsity team took the court later that evening against Seaford, they did so on a floor that now permanently honors a coach whose legacy will continue to inspire generations of Blue Raiders to come.
