Washington DC

Phillis Wheatley Elementary School’s Assistant Principal, Dr. Dawn Lybarger, recently participated in the NAESP National School Leaders Advocacy Conference in Washington, D.C., serving as one of two Delaware representatives, joining school leaders from across the country to advocate for students and public education.

The conference, hosted by the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP), focused on equipping school leaders with tools and strategies to effectively communicate the needs of students and schools at the federal level. Attendees received updates on the current federal education agenda and engaged in sessions centered on leadership, policy, and advocacy.

During the visit to Capitol Hill, Dr. Lybarger met with Representative Sarah McBride, as well as staff members from the offices of Senator Chris Coons and Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester. These conversations provided an opportunity to discuss national education priorities and share insight into the needs of Delaware schools and the students served at Phillis Wheatley Elementary.

As school leaders, it is important that we not only lead within our buildings, but also ensure that the voices of our students, families, and educators are represented in broader conversations about education policy,” Dr. Lybarger shared.

Through opportunities like this, PWES continues to stay connected to both state and national conversations impacting education, ensuring that our students remain at the center of decision-making.

We are proud of Dr. Lybarger for representing Phillis Wheatley Elementary and advocating on behalf of our school community and the state of Delaware.
